ABOUT US
Nehemiah Housing Development Fund Company (Nehemiah HDFC)
As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, we're dedicated to strengthening communities through the development of high-quality, affordable housing. Founded in the 1990s as the development arm of East Brooklyn Congregations (EBC), Nehemiah HDFC grew out of a grassroots movement determined to rebuild neighborhoods abandoned by disinvestment and neglect.
Since its inception, Nehemiah has remained fiercely committed to its mission: creating affordable housing opportunities that protect communities from the destabilizing effects of gentrification. To date, Nehemiah has developed over 4,900 affordable housing units across Brooklyn and the Bronx, with more than 1,300 additional units currently in the planning or construction stages. Our portfolio includes a range of single- and multi-family homes, rental apartments, and senior housing — all designed to foster long-term community stability and growth.
Nehemiah’s roots in community organizing have shaped its approach to development. Working alongside residents, leaders, and a team of top-tier architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants, Nehemiah transformed more than 2,700 vacant city-owned lots into vibrant neighborhoods now known as Nehemiah East New York, Brownsville, and New Lots. Today, Nehemiah is leading one of the most ambitious affordable housing initiatives in the nation: the transformation of a 40-acre former landfill into Nehemiah Spring Creek, a thriving community that will eventually offer over 2,600 predominantly affordable homes.
Our work has been nationally recognized as a model for urban renewal, demonstrating the power of combining expert development practices with deep community engagement. More than 5,300 families have been able to build stable futures within their neighborhoods because of Nehemiah’s efforts — reinforcing not just housing, but the schools, local businesses, and cultural fabric that define a community’s identity. At Nehemiah, we believe that strong communities are built when residents are empowered to stay, thrive, and invest in the places they call home. Our legacy of large-scale innovation continues to set new standards for what affordable housing development can achieve.
